CD of the Week-Coheed and Cambria: No World for Tomorrow
December 4th, 2007Sure, it’s been more than a week, but anyway.
The full title of Coheed and Cambria’s latest album is: “Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow”. Try and beat that for sheer audacity. It came out in October, and I am a big fan. For those of you unfamiliar with their body of work, each of their albums tells a portion of a sci-fi story about a war and aliens and two people named Coheed and Cambria. They’re almost a concept band. But you can listen to the music without having to delve into any of that; or you can go out and buy the accompanying graphic novels. (i’m not making this up. They’re like hardcore…nerds?) In accordance with the story, however, you will find lyrics dealing with violence and death.
“No World for Tomorrow” is probably their most ‘accessible’ album yet, which is a term music snobs often bandy about. By accessible I mean it’s the least weird and most straightforward, almost pop-y sounding album yet. Less screaming as well. By no means is this a pop album; Coheed and Cambria are still hard rockin’, high pitched vocalin’, sci-fi epic story tellin’ dudes. Also present on this album is their ‘theme’, which is a musical piece that has appeared in some portion of every one of their albums so far, in some form or another. Here it’s at the end of the album, which is appropriate, as this is supposed to be the last portion of the story.
I just hope the end of the story doesn’t mean the end of the music.
