New Tunes

November 12th, 2007

This site is not one o’ those sites that talks about music (or for that matter, my personal life) all the time…I presume you are here for the comic, not Aaron’s LiveJournal of Feelings™.

But, just for fun, here’s what’s new from Amazon or Cheapo lately:

  • Alter Bridge: Blackbird (2007). Stellar guitar work, positive lyrics, Myles Kennedy doing more varied vocals this time around. This album (and band) just rocks in a way I don’t encounter often in the hard rock scene. So many heavy bands are either singing the constant Linkin Park type refrain of ‘nobody knows how i FEEEEL i tear my heart OUUT’ or too busy with eyeliner to bother putting out a good disc; Alter Bridge is the answer to that. Also, guitar solos. I have missed them in the past two decades.
  • Rainer Maria: Look Now Look Again (1999). A 90’s lighter emo-ish (back when the word DIDN’T mean ‘my chemical romance’) band I’ve recently discovered. Being a German major, I was drawn to them by their name, i won’t deny it. (I once memorized ‘Das zerbrochene Ringlein’ for a speaking contest. But I digress.) There is a particular lo-fi charm in this disc. I’m unsure if it’s that the dual male-female vocals are out of pitch with each other or just using…unusual harmonies, but I am really enjoying the sound. Even if I’m not sure it is supposed to sound like this. Plus, I discovered they are from Wisconsin. Which makes everything better.

I listened to that Rainer Maria album awhile back. I liked the music, but (as you mentioned) the vocals were too “unusual” for me.

    Good post.

No question, Blackbird is one of the better albums from this year.
