Amazon MP3 store

September 25th, 2007

I like music. I don’t write much about it here nor do I spend time perusing Pitchfork or going to shows, but I love listening to and playing music. I’m not much for buying tunes online, as I like having the physical CDs all lined up in the bookcase. Beyond that, I prefer to rip my CDs as MP3, at 192 kbps, versus iTunes’ AACs. I can still hear some compression artifacts at 160 and lower. Not often, but now and then. And i’m not crazy about DRM. What can i say?

But apparently today or at least in the past couple days Amazon MP3 has started. Searching their catalog just for a couple minutes I’ve found some Violet Burning I don’t own (which is impressive), as well as several German bands that are really hard to find ’round the States. Even better, it’s all 256 kbps MP3s, DRM-FREE! Meaning, no restrictions on where and what you can play it on.

I may be making some purchases here in the near future. This is good news for Amazon. And probably for Apple, too. They’re getting so big a little competition won’t hurt.

I heard about this in a news report today. I’ll definitely have to check it out. Also excited that Apple has gone DRM free. That can only be good.
