On old Halloween costumes…
July 9th, 2007For some reason the Transformers hullabaloo lately reminded me of my Optimus Prime Halloween costume from when I was a lad.
It had the requisite nearly-flat blue thin plastic Optimus mask with a rubber band for the face.
And a yellow vinyl jumpsuit type thing for the body…that had a picture of Optimus Prime on it. Remember these costumes? (i actual recall learning what ‘flame retardant’ meant by the tag or sticker on this part and asking my mom what it meant). Thinking back on these (at least at the time) incredibly popular types of costume, why on earth did the vinyl suit/shirt have a picture of the character on it? Were we meant to believe that Optimus Prime wore shirts with…himself on them?
Anybody else have one of these?

Yea. I have a picture of me wearing a Slyvester (and Tweety) costume with the cheap mask and a a pic of sylvester on the shirt. nice.

Not me. My parents thought those type of costumes a waste of money. Looking back, I can’t say I’m too sad to have missed out on that one.

I had that costume too! I remember in grade school we would literally parade around the school in our costumes (seems pretty cruel to me now that I think about it) and I felt pretty cool in my plastic/vinyl transformers jumpsuit. A couple years ago I actually went out looking for one again thinking it would be a cool costume party costume.
