Spider-man 3 Notes

May 10th, 2007

Well, thanks to this fast paced world, my writing about Spider-man 3 is going to be about old news. That movie came out LAST WEEK, for crying out loud. Having now seen it twice, i can say the following. [OMG! SPOILERZ!]
1. I still liked it, even after two viewings. The action was just amazing, especially in the Imax. My overall rating: B+
Now, the comments:
2. I felt like making Flint Marko super-sympathetic was purposeless. In the comics (at least the 60’s ones) he was just a villian. We get it, he loves his daughter. Got it. But I’m pretty sure some people died in his various attacks, and Spider-man just lets him go? With forgiveness? I’m unsure.
3. Venom was well done. I know some folk have complained there wasn’t enough Venom, but to be fair, any movie w/ Venom would need the whole black suit buildup, and I thought that was done well. You can’t just start out with Venom, that wouldn’t make any sense. I do wish he would have had a more modified voice, and also had said “we” and “us”, but the whole “defeated by sonics” bit was spot-on.
4. Why is Captain Stacey a 90 year old man? Did he even need to be in it?
5. I used to like Kirsten Dunst. A lot. Have her teeth gotten farther apart? Oddly enough in the movie it seems that Gwen and Mary Jane have switched their original comic roles. (I haven’t read anything with Gwen in it for a long time, especially being that she has stayed dead, so I could be off by a bit) MJ was the hot party girl, who models and was basically out of Parker’s league. Gwen was a more normal, girl next door type. In the movie she was the gregarious model. It was nice they put so many characters in the movie, but I’m not sure how necessary Gwen was. I did love the scenes with Elizabeth Banks as Betty, though.

I enjoyed the movie. Not knowing the comic background I was completely fine with the amount of characters, etc. Made sense to me. The only way to make it a better movie would have been to put in some product placement for the Dyson Airblade hand dryer. Those things are sweet.
